Seoptist vs classic rank trackers
Rank trackers measure positions in a list of links. AI assistants do not produce a list of links. Here is what each kind of tool is for and why the two measure different things.
At a glance
| Criteria | Classic rank trackers | Seoptist |
|---|---|---|
| Engines covered | Google and Bing result pages; some flag AI Overview presence | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Copilot (3 on Starter, 5 on Growth, all 7 on Agency and Enterprise), plus organic and local rank tracking from Growth |
| Sampling | One result page per keyword per day | 3 answers per prompt per engine every week, with visibility, share of voice, position and sentiment (5 answers and daily runs on Enterprise; daily add-on for 20 prompts at £49/month) |
| Accuracy alerts | None; positions have no facts to verify | Answers compared against your fact card (prices, address, phone, product details) with alerts on mismatch, Growth and above |
| Audit | Usually a separate crawler product | Technical SEO, Core Web Vitals and GEO readiness audit (100 pages Starter, 500 Growth and Agency, 5,000 Enterprise) |
| Checklist | Keyword movements, not actions | One prioritised list scored impact x 2 minus effort, combining SEO and GEO findings, with how-to-fix guidance and copyable code |
| White-label | Common on agency tiers | Agency plan (£399/month) and Enterprise: logo and colours, client workspaces, client-viewer logins |
| Price from | Varies widely by keyword volume | £49/month ex VAT, 14-day trial with card, two months free on annual billing |
If you have done SEO for any length of time you already own a rank tracker, or your agency does. It tells you that you are third for "emergency electrician Sheffield" on mobile, that you were fifth last month, and that a competitor has overtaken you for a dozen terms. That is still valuable. The question this page answers is why it does not tell you how ChatGPT or Gemini talk about you, and what you need alongside it.
Where classic rank trackers work
Rank trackers are mature, cheap per keyword, and precise at the job they were built for: recording your position in Google and Bing results for a defined keyword, device and location. If organic search is still your largest channel, and for most UK businesses it is, you should keep tracking it. Seoptist includes rank tracking from the Growth plan for that reason.
Some trackers have also started flagging whether an AI Overview appeared for a keyword and whether your domain was cited in it. That is a useful first signal and worth having.
Where it breaks down
A ranking is a position in an ordered list of ten pages. An AI answer is a paragraph that names three or four businesses, explains why, and sometimes quotes a price or an opening time. There is no position 7. There is mentioned, not mentioned, and in what order and with what sentiment. A rank tracker has no column for any of that.
Keywords are not prompts. "accountant leeds" is a keyword; "I'm a sole trader in Leeds, which accountant should I use and what will it cost?" is a prompt. Assistants answer the whole sentence, and the businesses they pick for it are often not the ones ranking for the two-word keyword. Tracking the keyword tells you nothing about the prompt.
Answers also vary between runs, so a single daily check is one sample rather than a measurement. And rank trackers only see Google and Bing; they do not query ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude at all, and most do not read the full text of AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Finally, a rank tracker reports the number and stops. It does not tell you that the reason you are absent from Perplexity's answer is that your robots.txt blocks PerplexityBot, or that Gemini quotes a price from a directory listing you forgot to update.

Seoptist gathers AI answers only through official APIs (OpenAI, Gemini, Perplexity Sonar, Anthropic) and licensed data providers (SerpApi, DataForSEO). It does not scrape consumer chat interfaces.
Who should choose which
Keep your rank tracker if your reporting is built around keyword positions and that is what your clients or board expect. It answers a real question and it answers it well.
Add AI visibility tracking when you want to know whether assistants recommend you at all, which competitors they name instead, whether the facts they quote are right, and what to change. A first-page ranking and an empty ChatGPT answer often sit side by side for the same business. Seeing both in one place, feeding one checklist, is the point.
