citation

In short: A citation is a source link that an AI assistant attaches to its answer to show where a claim came from.

A citation is a link, footnote or source card that an AI engine shows next to or beneath its answer. Engines with live retrieval, including Perplexity, ChatGPT with search, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, use citations to show which pages they read before writing. Engines answering purely from training data do not cite because there is no retrieved page to point to.

Citations matter for two reasons. They are a direct source of referral traffic, which you can see in GA4 as visits from domains such as perplexity.ai or chatgpt.com. They are also the strongest evidence that an engine treats your page as authoritative for that question, rather than merely knowing your name.

Seoptist records every citation returned by the official APIs together with any URLs found in the answer text, normalises the domains and flags those belonging to the tracked brand. From this it reports a citation rate (answers citing your domain divided by total answers) and a list of the domains cited most often for your prompts. That second list is often the most actionable output: if a directory or forum is cited repeatedly and you are not on it, that is where to go next.
