How do I get cited by Perplexity?

Short answer: Allow PerplexityBot, publish pages that answer one specific question directly near the top, and make sure the facts match what other sources say about you.

Perplexity cites a source when three things are true: its crawler can fetch the page, the page contains a passage that answers the user's question directly, and the claim is consistent with what other sources say. You control all three.

Let it in. Check robots.txt for PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User, and check your CDN or firewall for 403 responses to those user agents. A blocked crawler cannot cite you; it will cite whichever directory or competitor describes you instead.

Write liftable passages. Perplexity's answers are built from short quotations. A page is far more likely to be cited when:

  • The first paragraph under a heading states the answer in two or three plain sentences, with the entity named ("Acme Electrical in Reading installs EV chargers from £850 including OZEV grant paperwork").
  • Each page or section covers one question, so the passage is unambiguous.
  • Numbers, dates, prices and locations are specific rather than "competitive" or "across the region".
  • The page has a clear title and FAQPage or Service schema where it fits.

Be corroborated. Perplexity leans heavily on sources it already trusts for a category: review sites, trade bodies, local press and community forums. If your facts there disagree with your site, it hedges. If they agree, it quotes you with confidence.

Check which domains it cites now. For each of your prompts, Seoptist lists the domains Perplexity cited and whether yours was among them (the citation rate). The domains that keep appearing are where you should also be present: a listing, a review profile, a guest article.

Give it two to four weeks after changes. Perplexity's index refreshes faster than model training, so citations are one of the first GEO results you can see.
