How many prompts should I track?
Short answer: Most local businesses need 20 to 30 prompts; multi-service brands and e-commerce 50 to 100; agencies typically run 15 to 30 per client.
For a single-location service business, 20 to 30 prompts is usually enough. For a brand with several product lines or regions, 50 to 100. Agencies tend to settle on 15 to 30 per client. More than that mostly adds cost without adding insight.
The reason is that prompts cluster. A plumber in Bath does not need 200 variations of "plumber in Bath"; the assistants treat those as one intent and the answers overlap heavily. What matters is covering the distinct ways customers ask:
- Direct category prompts: "best emergency plumber in Bath", "plumbers near Bath that do boiler repairs".
- Problem-led prompts: "my boiler is leaking, who should I call in Bath".
- Comparison and trust prompts: "is [your business] any good", "[your business] vs [competitor]".
- Price and process prompts: "how much does a boiler service cost in Somerset".
- Each core service and each location you want to be found for.
A useful discipline is one prompt per intent, not one per keyword. If two prompts would get the same answer from a human expert, keep one.
Seoptist's onboarding reads your site and suggests a starting prompt set that you can edit. Plan limits are 30 prompts on Starter, 100 on Growth and 300 across clients on Agency, with a +50 prompt add-on at £39 a month if you outgrow them. Enterprise is unlimited.
Start smaller than you think, run for four weeks, then look at which prompts never mention anyone in your category. Those are usually badly phrased and worth replacing. See /pricing for the plan limits side by side.
