Google AI Overviews for UK businesses: what triggers them and how to appear in them

AI Overviews now sit above the organic results for a growing share of UK searches. Here is which queries trigger them, how the sources are chosen, and what to change on your site to be one of them.

Google AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries that appear at the top of some search results, with a row of source links alongside. They rolled out in the UK in 2024, have expanded steadily since, and for many commercial queries they now push the first organic result below the fold. If your business depends on Google traffic, they are the most consequential change to the results page in a decade.

This post covers what triggers them, how Google chooses the sources, and what you can do about it. It also covers AI Mode, the fully conversational version, because the two share machinery.

What triggers an AI Overview

Google does not publish the rules, but the behaviour is consistent enough to describe. Overviews appear more often for:

  • Informational and explanatory queries: "how does a heat pump work", "what is a CP12 certificate", "difference between Cat6 and Cat6a".
  • Comparison and decision queries: "best accounting software for sole traders uk", "invisalign vs braces cost".
  • Long, conversational queries: anything phrased as a full question, which is increasingly how people search.
  • Queries where Google judges a synthesised answer helps: multi-part questions, questions with caveats.

They appear less often for:

  • Pure navigational queries ("hmrc login").
  • Very short, ambiguous queries.
  • Some sensitive categories, where Google is cautious about health, finance and legal advice, though this has loosened over time.
  • Many local "near me" queries, where the local pack still dominates, although Overviews for "best X in [town]" are increasingly common.

For a UK local service business, the practical observation is that your service and area pages may not trigger Overviews, but the questions customers ask before choosing you ("how much does a rewire cost", "do I need Part P") frequently do. That is where the opportunity is.

How sources are chosen

AI Overviews are built from Google's index, not a separate crawl. There is no AI-Overview-Bot; Googlebot does the work and Google-Extended only controls training use of your content, not Overviews. The sources shown are drawn from pages that rank well for the query and for the sub-queries Google generates to answer it, a process sometimes called query fan-out.

That has two consequences:

  1. Ranking still matters. Pages in the top results for the query or its sub-queries are the candidates. A page that does not rank in the top twenty for anything relevant is unlikely to be cited.
  2. Ranking is not sufficient. Among the candidates, the Overview favours pages that contain a passage answering the sub-question directly. The number one result can be skipped in favour of the number seven result that has the clean paragraph.

Seoptist tracks AI Overviews through a licensed SERP data provider with a UK location set for every query, because Overviews differ by location and the UK results are not the same as the US ones.

Being one of the sources

Target the sub-questions, not only the head term

A query like "how much does it cost to rewire a 3 bed house uk" fans out into cost ranges, factors that affect cost, how long it takes, whether you need to move out, and certification. A page that answers all of those with a heading and a direct paragraph each is a candidate for several citations. A page that only has a price table is a candidate for one.

Write the answer paragraph first

Under each heading, the first sentence or two should be the answer, with a figure where there is one:

A full rewire of a three-bedroom house in the UK typically costs between £4,000 and £7,000 in 2026, depending on the size of the property, access to floors and walls, and whether the consumer unit is replaced. Most take five to ten working days.

Qualifications and detail follow. This is the same structure that works for every other assistant, which is why a single content approach serves both SEO and GEO.

Keep it current and dated

Overviews favour recent information for anything involving prices, regulations or availability. Date your pages visibly and keep dateModified accurate.

Use structured data where it clarifies

FAQPage for genuine FAQs, Article with dateModified, LocalBusiness or Organization for the entity. None of these guarantees inclusion, but each reduces ambiguity about what the page is and who wrote it.

Technical hygiene

Overviews can only cite pages Google can render and index. The same list as always: no accidental noindex, content in HTML, mobile-friendly, Core Web Vitals in reasonable shape, no interstitials that hide the text.

AI Mode

AI Mode is the conversational tab in Google Search, where the whole results page becomes a chat. It uses the same index and a similar fan-out, but it runs more sub-queries, draws on more sources and keeps context across follow-ups. The pages it cites overlap heavily with those in Overviews, so the same work serves both. The difference for measurement is that AI Mode answers are longer and more variable, which makes sampling even more important.

Measuring your presence

Three things are worth tracking:

  • Trigger rate: for your tracked queries, how often an Overview appears at all. If it is rising, organic clicks for those queries will fall whether or not you are cited.
  • Citation rate: how often your domain is among the sources when an Overview appears.
  • Mention rate: how often your brand is named in the Overview text, which can happen without a citation when a third-party page names you.

Seoptist's Growth plan and above includes AI Overviews as a tracked engine, with UK location set per query, and reports all three alongside your classic rankings for the same terms. AI Mode is available on Agency and Enterprise. Plans start at £49 a month; see pricing for what each tier covers.

A checklist

[ ] Listed the 10-20 pre-purchase questions customers ask before choosing you
[ ] Checked which of those currently show an AI Overview in the UK
[ ] One page (or one section) per question, heading phrased as the question
[ ] First paragraph under each heading answers it directly, with a figure or date where possible
[ ] Visible "Updated" date and accurate dateModified in schema
[ ] FAQPage schema on pages with real FAQs
[ ] Page ranks top 20 for the question or a close variant (if not, it is an SEO task first)
[ ] Googlebot can render the page; Core Web Vitals pass on mobile

Frequently asked questions

Can I opt out of AI Overviews without leaving Google Search?

No. Overviews draw on the same index as Search. Google-Extended in robots.txt only affects use of your content for training Gemini models. The nosnippet and max-snippet directives limit how much of your text can be shown, which reduces the chance of being cited but does not remove you from Search.

Do AI Overviews reduce my traffic?

For queries where an Overview appears and you are not cited, the industry pattern is a drop in clicks. Where you are cited, the effect varies by query. Either way, tracking which of your queries trigger Overviews is the first step to understanding your own numbers.

Are UK AI Overviews different from US ones?

Yes. Trigger rates, the sources chosen and the content differ by location and language. Measure with UK location settings or the data will not reflect what your customers see.
