Perplexity citations: how to become a source it quotes
Perplexity shows its sources with every answer, which makes it the most transparent engine to optimise for. Here is what it cites, why, and how to get your pages into the list.

Perplexity is the AI engine that shows its working. Every answer carries numbered citations, each one a real page it retrieved and read. For anyone trying to understand how assistants choose sources, that transparency is a gift: you can see exactly which pages won, open them, and work out why.
This post is about using that gift. It covers how Perplexity assembles an answer, the patterns in what it cites, and the practical changes that move a page from "read but not cited" to "cited".
How a Perplexity answer is built
The mechanics, simplified:
- Your question is rewritten into one or more search queries.
- Those queries run against Perplexity's own index and, for some question types, live web fetches.
- A set of candidate pages is retrieved and ranked.
- Passages from the top candidates are passed to a language model with instructions to answer and cite.
- The model writes the answer, attributing claims to the passages it used.
Two consequences follow. First, you must be retrievable: PerplexityBot must be able to crawl you, and your page must be a good match for the rewritten query, not only for the original phrasing. Second, being retrieved is not enough; the model has to find a passage in your page worth attributing a claim to. Pages that are retrieved but say nothing quotable are read and discarded.
What Perplexity tends to cite
Looking across the prompts we track for UK businesses, the citation lists show recurring preferences. These are patterns, not rules.
- Pages that answer one question well. A page titled and structured around a single question outperforms a broad services page for that question.
- Community and review sources. Reddit threads, forum posts and review platforms appear far more often in Perplexity citations than in Google's top results for the same intent. If the honest conversation about your category happens on a forum, Perplexity has probably read it.
- Recent pages. Dates matter, especially for anything price- or availability-related. A page last updated in 2022 competes poorly with a thinner page from last month.
- Specific, checkable claims. Numbers, names, dates, named standards. "Our Cat6a installations are tested to ISO/IEC 11801 and certified with a Fluke DSX" gets cited; "high-quality, professional installations" does not.
- Clean HTML. Server-rendered text with sensible headings. Pages that depend on JavaScript to show content are often retrieved as near-empty.
Why your page was read but not cited
If you see your domain in the retrieval but not in the citations (Seoptist shows both), the usual reasons are:
- The relevant passage is buried under introductory copy, so the model used a competitor's passage that got to the point.
- The page makes the claim vaguely, so there is nothing precise to attribute.
- A better-known source makes the same claim, and the model prefers the one it has more confidence in.
- The page's title and headings do not match the rewritten query, so it ranked low among candidates.
Making a page citable
Open with the answer
The first paragraph under each H2 should be a complete, standalone answer to the question the heading poses. Imagine it lifted out of the page with no context. If it still makes sense and still carries a fact, it is quotable.
Weak:
At Example Cabling we pride ourselves on delivering structured cabling solutions tailored to each client's unique requirements.
Citable:
Example Cabling installs Cat6 and Cat6a structured cabling for offices in Leeds and West Yorkshire. A typical 50-outlet fit-out takes two days and costs from £45 per outlet including testing and certification.
Use question headings where the intent is a question
"How much does office data cabling cost in the UK?" as an H2, followed immediately by a figure and a range, matches the rewritten queries Perplexity generates far better than "Pricing".
Put the date on the page
A visible "Updated June 2026" line, plus dateModified in Article or WebPage schema, helps both retrieval and the reader. Then actually update it when facts change.
Give it something to attribute
Add the detail a journalist would want: the standard you work to, the equipment you use, the guarantee period, the number of installations, the certification body. Each is a potential citation hook.
Be present where Perplexity already looks
Check the citations for the prompts that matter to you. If a trade forum, a review site or a Reddit community appears repeatedly, make sure you are accurately represented there. That does not mean astroturfing; it means answering genuine questions under your own name and keeping your profiles accurate.
Technical preconditions
[ ] robots.txt allows PerplexityBot (and Perplexity-User for on-demand fetches)
[ ] No WAF or CDN challenge for those user agents
[ ] curl -A "PerplexityBot" https://yourdomain.co.uk/page/ returns the full text
[ ] Canonical set correctly so citations point at the page you want
[ ] Page loads within a reasonable time; very slow pages are dropped during retrieval
Measuring citations rather than mentions
Being mentioned in an answer and being cited as a source are different outcomes, and it is worth tracking both. A brand can be mentioned because a review site named it, with the review site taking the citation. Seoptist records a citation rate (answers that cite your own domain divided by total answers) alongside visibility, so you can see whether your own pages are doing the talking or a third party is. A rising citation rate is the clearest sign that content changes are working, because it is the one metric you fully control.
What not to do
- Do not stuff pages with questions nobody asks to game question headings.
- Do not hide text intended for models. It is detected and it undermines trust in the rest of the page.
- Do not fake dates. A
dateModifiedthat changes weekly while the content does not is a pattern retrieval systems can spot.
Getting started
Pick the five prompts that matter most to your business. Ask Perplexity each one, open every citation, and note what those pages do that yours does not. Then rewrite your best-matching page with the answer first, a date, and three checkable facts. Re-check in a fortnight.
The free AI Visibility Check runs five prompts for you and lists the cited domains per engine, which is a faster way to do the first step.
Frequently asked questions
Does Perplexity use Google's index?
Perplexity maintains its own index and crawler (PerplexityBot) and also performs live fetches. The ranking is its own, which is one reason its citations differ from Google's top results.
Why does Perplexity cite Reddit so often?
Community discussions tend to contain specific, first-hand claims and recent dates, which is what the retrieval and answer steps favour. The practical response is to be accurately represented in those communities rather than to try to displace them.
Can I see which of my pages Perplexity cites?
Yes, from the answer itself: each citation is a link. For systematic tracking across many prompts and weeks, Seoptist records the cited URLs per answer and reports your citation rate per engine.
